Every fly fisher knows the drive: two hours to a river that turns out to be blown out, closed for temperature, or fishing far better twenty miles upstream. The information to know that existed the whole time — in a gauge, a forecast, an agency notice — just not in one place, and not in words a person could act on.

RiverFinn puts those sources on one screen for the stretches people actually fish, and adds Finn, a guide who reads them the way an experienced friend would. It started in Colorado and now covers Montana, Michigan, Washington and Oregon, one carefully configured section at a time.

The rules RiverFinn holds itself to

• Show the measurement and its source. Never a number without a station, a time and a link.
• Say what is missing, exactly. "No thermometer on this reach" beats a plausible guess every time.
• Closures outrank arithmetic. A closed water is closed, whatever the score.
• Safety information is free. Closures, advisories and alerts are never behind the paywall.
• Finn answers from the data. No invented hatches, flows or rules.
• Add rivers carefully. A water joins RiverFinn when it has a usable gauge, a fishery type and agency sources — not because it was requested most.
